Text

The Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers make up the three-volume curriculum of A Course in Miracles, an acclaimed spiritual guide that teaches the path to universal love and peace is through undoing guilt by forgiving others. The life-changing thought system focuses on forgiveness, healing relationships and making them holy. While the Course uses language of traditional Christianity, it is ecumenical and a non-denominational spiritual teaching.

The work was scribed by Helen Schucman through a process of inner dictation that she recognized as coming from Jesus. A psychologist at Columbia University, she began to receive the material in 1965. She worked on the course for ten years before it was first published in 1976. Since then, over three million copies have been sold worldwide without any paid advertising. The three volumes have gained the status of modern spiritual classics and are used by men and women from all walks of life and every major faith.

A Course in Miracles is unique among modern spiritual writings because of its unabashedly practical approach to salvation. It focuses on forgiveness as the key to changing our perception of the world and ourselves, allowing us to see the world as a loving place where we can find true peace. In this era of increasing global conflict and environmental crisis, A Course in Miracles has become a valuable resource for those seeking to transform their lives through the practice of forgiveness.

While the Course can be studied on one's own, it is most effective when it is guided by an experienced teacher. In this role, the teacher serves as a mentor to those who are new to the study of A Course in Miracles. The teacher can be a student of the Course or an already established spiritual practitioner.

While the Workbook for Students provides a clear, step-by-step approach to applying the principles of the course, the Manual for Teachers offers clarification on several points that students might question. This is done in a question-and-answer format, and it is a helpful companion for those who want to deepen their understanding of the course's theory while also facilitating its application in daily life.

Workbook for Students

A Course in Miracles is a complete self-study spiritual thought system consisting of a Text, Workbook for Students and Manual for Teachers. It teaches that the way to universal love and peace, or remembering God, is by undoing guilt through forgiving others and healing our relationships. The curriculum it presents is carefully conceived and clearly explained, both on the theoretical and practical levels, although it emphasizes experience over theology. It also emphasizes that it is but one version of a universal curriculum of many thousands, expressing an ecumenical spirituality.

The Workbook for Students includes 365 lessons, with one lesson for each day of the year. These lessons are designed to change your perception of everyone and everything in the world. Some of the ideas the Workbook presents may seem hard to believe, and some may even be startling. However, it is your willingness to apply them that will give them meaning for you.

It is possible for anyone at all to benefit from the study of A Course in Miracles, although it must be noted that it is written on a very high intellectual level with sophisticated metaphysical, theological and psychological concepts interwoven throughout the three books. As a result, people without an academic background in these areas might have difficulty with much of the material.

The Course is not a religion, but rather a restatement of the core wisdom found in every major world religion. While it uses the language of Christianity, and is written by a woman who was a self-professed “militant atheist,” it expresses a non-sectarian, non-denominational spirituality. It is also a universal spiritual teaching, emphasizing that all paths lead to God.

Manual for Teachers

This volume contains Book 3 of A Course in Miracles, the Manual for Teachers. It is written in question and answer form, and provides answers to many of the more likely questions a student might ask. It also includes a clarification of some terms that are used throughout the Text, and explains their meaning within the theoretical framework of the Course.

A Course in Miracles is a self-study spiritual thought system that consists of three books: a Text, a Workbook for Students, and a Manual for Teachers. It teaches that the way to universal love and peace—or remembering God—is through undoing guilt through forgiveness of others. While the language of the Course is that of traditional Christianity, it teaches that it is but one version of a universal curriculum, of which there are "many thousands."

The goal of this course is to teach you to recognize and respond to the call to forgiveness in your daily life. It is intended to be a gentle guide to help you learn to let go of the fear and tension that make up your world, and to accept the peace that is already there in the midst of it. The lessons of the Workbook are designed to be done every day, and they will gradually build up a shift in your perspective, helping you to see the world as it really is.

Although you may read the lessons in any order you choose, it is suggested that you begin by reading the Introduction to the Workbook, and then proceed with the lesson for the day. It is important to be completely focused on your experience of each lesson, not the thoughts that might come up as you are doing them.

This edition of the Combined Volume, Third Edition contains all the writings that Helen Schucman, the Scribe of A Course in Miracles, authorized to be printed. It contains the Preface, Text, and two pamphlets, as well as the Introduction to the Workbook, and the supplemental materials that are found in the earlier publications of A Course in Miracles.

Supplements

A Course in Miracles (or ACIM, as it is often abbreviated) consists of three books: the Text, Workbook, and Manual for Teachers. It is a self-study curriculum that combines a purely non-dualistic philosophy with practical lessons and applications of forgiveness. It is widely regarded as one of the most influential spiritual texts of our time.

It envisions a relationship between the miracle worker and the miracle receiver that is very familiar to anyone in our culture. However, the Course transforms this form by immensely enriching it with new content. At the same time, it shifts the emphasis of our attention from an outer situation pervaded by disease, inequality and separation, to a spiritual reality characterized by wholeness, equality and unity.

The Course also envisions a different way to communicate with one another. It suggests that the miracle worker extends a gift of a new perception to those who need it, conveyed through sincere acts of caring and kindness. Similarly, the miracle receiver responds by extending love to the giver and receiving it in return. This is a holy interaction in which they transcend the separateness that has been foundational to their old pattern.

In the Course, miracles are the expression of God’s Love. He uses them to release our identification with our ego identities and restore our innate wholeness. It is the function of the miracle worker to offer the gift of a new perception to those who desperately need it, and the role of the miracle receiver to receive the gift and extend the gift in return. To do so, they must be free from any resentments that may have prevented them from seeing the truth. The only way to achieve this freedom is by recognizing the true nature of the relationship between God and His Sons. By doing so, they can enter into the eternal joy of the Love of God. In the end, the purpose of the Course is to lead all minds to this joy. This is accomplished by teaching them that what they have been looking for all their lives is a miracle.
